5/26/2023 0 Comments 92 w250 king pins bushingsI've reamed out kingpin bushings with a brake cylinder hone that goes in a drill. Last set of spindle I put together I used a big hammer to put the kingpins in. i tried the video link but it would not come up. I have both and you might want to see if someone local has the solid reamer (.710?) you can use as it's much easier than the adjustable one. If you're using a new adjustable reamer you must make several passes until you get the bushing reamed to the correct size. I've done a few sets and always used a cutting oil and next time I'll try the oil bath. Last edited by L572 on Wed 9:25 am edited 1 time in total It is much beefier than the first reamer (and it has two pilots) and cuts very easily through the bronze. Since then I was able to buy the correct VW tool: VW 224. Ten years ago it ran about $70 plus shipping. It is a nice unit with one pilot bush for centering the reamer. I did my first set of king pin bushes with an adjustable reamer I bought from Chadwick & Trefethen Tools. I also reamed in multiple stages since I wanted to remove as little material as possible on each pass and not 'over-cut' the bushing, or overstress the reamer blades. This made the pressing of the king a lot easier than simply hammering it or cold pressing it.Īnd #2: I used a bit of cutting oil (kerosene, as I recall) during the reaming process. I found an old deep fat fryer at a thrift store, filled it with K-mart 30W motor oil, and heated to something like 170º F (don't quote me.I can't remember exactly). This is described in the big Bentley manual (1961-1965). This allows a "shrink to fit" interference fit. The only 2 things I did differently: #1: was to warm the link in an oil bath prior to pressing in the king pin. "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats."-H.L.Mencken Here is a video link from KCW that walks you through the the process. I took my set to a vw repair shop and they reamed them for me while I waited. You can change all the parts but you will need to have the Kin Pin bushings reamed to fit your new pins. can the r and e of the set be accomplished with large vice or impact bj press. were to buy? not sure if the reamer is specific to king pin bushings or just the proper size reamer. i have not seen the (suggested) reamer needed. does any one have any tricks and or tips for home installation. I have a king pin set (65 bug) coming soon. Posted: Sun 6:41 pm Post subject: king pin install Quick sort: Show newest posts on top | Show oldest posts on top
